As one of the www.tenartists.co.uk, who took part in the BBC’s big Painting Challenge, I was incredibly privileged to be a guest of the Glasgow School of Art where we were tutored by the very talented tutor, Rosemary Beaton. We were provided with a life model for the day – plus food at all points! – and our day was filmed, courtesy of Cass Art Supplies.
As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed a tour of the Rennie Macintosh building, which was severely damaged by fire on May 23rd, 2014. Wearing hard hats, goggles, boots and hi-vis jackets, we picked our way gingerly through each floor, examining burnt remains of furniture and fittings, floors and decorations.
The top floor was exhilarating or scary (depending upon your point of view!) but the dedicated restoration work being undertaken is breath-taking. The architect who led us around this amazing and highly distinctive building talked of it as though it were his own home. I am looking forward to seeing it when it again houses Glasgow School of Art students once again.
